La Sardegna é una delle terre emerse più antiche d'Europa. Sull'isola si possono trovare minerali e rocce di qualsiasi era geologica. Il granito, che in questo caso é di particolare interesse, si trova principalmente a Gallura, che si trova lungo la CostaSmeralda nel nord della Sardegna e si estende fino ad Olbia. Il granito, specialmente quello che proviene dall'isola della Maddalena, é tra i più famosi in tutto il mondo.

Sardinia is one of the most geologically ancient bodies of land in Europe and there are minerals and rocks of almost all geological ages to be found on the island. Granite, which is of particular interest here, is found mainly in the Gallura in the north of the island and along Costa Smeralda almost all the way to Olbia. The granite, especially the one from the island of La Maddalena, is well known all over the world.

Il granito é una roccia costituita da grani visibili ad occhio nudo. Si forma dal lento scolo del magma fuso che si trova al di sotto della superficie terrestre.Le dimensioni di questi grani dipendono dalla velocità con il quale il magma fuso si raffredda. Più il raffreddamento é rapido, più piccoli saranno i grani ( pochi mm di diametro) viceversa un lento raffreddamento genera grani più grandi (di dimensione superiore ai 10 mm).

Granite is a rock with grains that are visible to the naked eye. It forms from the slow cooling of molten magma below the Earth's surface. The size of the grains depends on how fast the molten magma cools off. Faster cooling renders smaller grains (a few mm in diameter) while a slower cooling furnishes bigger grains (up to 10 mm in size).

I grani sono costituiti principalmente da feldspato e quarzo e, in quantità minore da altri minerali. é proprio questa composizione di minerali a dare al granito il suo colore caratteristico che puo' variare dal rosso (più feldspato e menpo quarzo) alrosa, grigio e bianco (più quarzo e meno feldspato).

The grains are mainly made up of feldspar and quartz with minor amounts of other minerals. The mineral composition gives granite its color which can vary from red (more feldspar and less quartz) through pink to gray and white (more quartz and less feldspar).

In quello di colore più scuro, talvolta tendente al nero, i grani che normalmente sono visibili all'interno del granito, provengono da piccole quantità di biotite o orneblenda.

The darker, sometimes blackish, grains that are visible in granite normally come from minor amounts of biotite or hornblende.
