Avnø bliver fastland
I anden halvdel af 1800 tallet var der et ønske om at inddrage mere land til landbrug. Efter en lang proces opførte man dæmninger med det formål dels at gøre Avnø landfast, dels at afvande Svinø Nor.
Først byggede man en dæmning fra Svinø til Avnø ved Hylte Mad (nu Hylteholme). Dernæst kom dæmningerne ved Avnø broer. De strækker sig fra Avnø til Sallerupgård, kun afbrudt af kanalen fra Svinø Nor – der hvor man nu kan se pumpestationen. Dengang var der ikke en pumpe, men en selvoplukkelig sluse der tillod afvanding når vandstanden imod land var højere end i fjorden. Men det var ikke nok til at sikre de nyindvundne engarealer imod at blive oversvømmet ved højvande. Sundet mellem Avnø og Svinø udvikledes sig til rørsump.
I slutningen af 1936 var afvandingen fuldført, og i de efterfølgende år begyndte man at opdyrke arealerne. Pumpestationen er fra denne periode. Fra udkigstårnet kan du se ud over Mulvig, som tidligere var en del af det nordlige vand omkring Avnø, samt mod pumpestationen.

Avnø becomes mainland
In the second half of the 19th century there was a desire to include more land for agriculture. After a long process, dams were constructed with the purpose of making Avnø a part of the mainland, only separated by canal from Svinø Nor
First, a dam was built from Svinø to Avnø at Hylte Mad (now Hylteholme). Next came the dams at Avnø bridges. They extend from Avnø to Sallerupgård, only interrupted by the canal from Svinø Nor - where you can now see the pump station. At that time there was no pump, but a self-closing sluice that allowed drainage when the water level in the canal was higher than in the fjord. But it was not enough to secure the newly-harvested meadows against being flooded at high tide. The sound between Avnø and Svinø developed into a sump.
At the end of 1936, the drainage had been completed, and in the following years, the cultivation of land began. The pump station is from this period.
From the watch tower you can look out over Mulvig, which previously was part of the northern water around Avnø, as well as towards the pump station.
