This cache is placed along the stunning and infrequently visited road to Peter's Port. The "port" itself is merely a slipway used by fishermen. Originally a pier was built here in 1896 at the cost of £3000 so that mail steamers could call to deliver mail to Benbecula. However, MacBraynes refused to land due to the depth of the channel needed. The next problem was a lack of navigation lights. MacBraynes finally agreed to land in 1910 only to stop in 1911. There were still questions about navigation lights in the House of Commons in 1924 but none were forthcoming. Once the causeway was built in the 1930s interest was lost in the port.
The great thing was we are left with this wonderful drive to almost nowhere. When we placed the cache we saw seals and owls along the way.
The cache itself is placed on an islet off shore. When placed the high tide was 3.8m and you could access the cache without a problem (some of the rocks were slippy, though). However, the tide can be significantly higher (one week on from placement the high tide is 4.9m and not accessible). The clear rule here is watch the tides and check the tide tables!
Having said that, the route to the cache should take an able bodied person no more than about 10 minutes, and the same time back.
You do need to be able-bodied, though. The terrain is rocks, grass hummocks, and bracken.
The cache container is small and contains a gift for the FTF, a pen, pencil and log book. Due to the location please ensure everything is placed back carefully and especially ensure the container is screwed up tight so that the o-ring keeps everything dry!
