This is a simple stage multi and I hope you enjoy finding out some information about Ballarat’s founding father!
William Cross Yuille was the founder of Ballarat in 1838. Immigrating from Glasgow in August of 1836 at the age of 17, he spent a few years moving around from Hobart, to Geelong and eventually settling in Ballarat some 2 years later.
He settled with a sheep station which he sold another 2 years later and moved on to New Zealand, then back to Victoria and eventually settled in Williamstown where he owned and trained multiple successful horses in Victoria. He was considered for many years “one of the foremost men on the Victorian turf”.
Lake Wendouree was for some time known as “Yuille’s Swamp”, and also has a primary school in Wendouree named after him, as well as streets in Ballarat, Melton, Geelong West, Buninyong and Brighton.
