Geocache Description:

The Massasauga Rattlesnake and the Ontario Provincial Park that protects its vital habitat inspired this cache.

Hibernacula- usually a rock crevasse, old ground hog hole, dead rotten stump or any places below the frost line where a number of snakes will take refuse from the cold during the winter months to hibernate.

This is not an easy cache to get to in one day and you will probably have to spend at least one night Interior Park camping. The cache is located on Spider Lake and is in a section of the park that is water access only and can only be accessed by canoe. The Massasauga Provincial Park is part of the Ontario Provincial Park system and being so requires backcountry interior permits and in most cases camping reservations. The most efficient way into the park is through the Three Legged Lake Access Point. You will however, have to pick up you back country permit at Oastler Lake Provincial Park located off hwy 69, follow the signs.

I chose this park to place a cache because it is one of my favorite parks to visit and camp. Don't forget your fishing rod because this is a great place to fish.

The container is a white PVC tube with a cap on one end and a screw top on the other. This cache contains about 25 small plastic snakes and a large rubber Massasauga Rattlesnake. Feel free to take a snake, they want to see the world! Don't forget to log your visit I would like to hear about your trip. Remember to completely recover the cache once finished.

I have posted a cheater map so be warned before you open it. If you already own or will be purchasing the Massasauga interior camping and facilities tripping map than this cheater map will make perfect sense to you.

Remember:

This park has Massasauga Rattlesnakes, which are venomous. So take precautions when poking around looking for geocaches. Rattlesnakes are generally shy and tend not to strike unless provoked. When you hear a distinctive buzzing sound or "rattle", stop moving, determine the snake's whereabouts, and then move away slowly. It only takes common sense to stay safe. That being said don't worry I have only seen one rattlesnake ever in the last ten years visiting this site.
