Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in accordance with the 2019 Kern River Valley Camp Out.

This is a two stage multi. We needed a multi cache to add to the icons for the 8-icon day. The first stage will give you coordinates to get to the final stage. The two stages are not too far apart.

The following information is provided from the Bob Powers Book, North Fork Country. In 1910 a couple moved to the upper Kern that started the name Fairview on its road to fame. This was Matt and Lupie Burlando. Matt was born in Turin, Italy, in 1886. After coming to the Valley as a young man, he went to work for the Edison Company. In 1910, he married Lupie Apalatea, whose father, Francisco, lived where the town of Kernville now stands. Soon after Matt and Lupie were married, they moved upriver to the Edison camp at the end of the wagon road. Matt packed and did blacksmith work for Edison. Then called Fairview, the Edison Company later changed the name to Camp 8. In December of 1911, Betsy, the Burlando's first child, was born. Soon afterwards Matt decided he wanted to go into business for himself. Moving his wife and child downstream half a mile, he started what was later known as Fairview Lodge. The spot was nothing but a big brush patch with a wagon road through it when they first started. Lupie helped her husband pile the brush. Matt also build a swinging bridge across the river so he could utilize the natural hot springs that came up on the west side of the river. After building a home at the location, Lupe started a cookhouse to feed the Edison workers and tourists who liked the good hunting and fishing in the area. This same building that was used as a dwelling, dining hall, and store was later used as part of McNally's Steak House.
