Lava Bed II Traditional Cache

In the Gifford Pinchot, south of Goose Lake in the Big Lava Bed. We would suggest that you do not bring children or dogs into the Big Lava Bed.
We enjoy the harsh and sometimes stark terrain of Big Lava Bed. The lava rock formations are incredible. This is a very old flow, and nature has tried to reclaim the lava with trees. Typically, you will find it nearly impossible to travel on a straight bearing line for more than a few hundred feet. As the rock can sometimes be rather sharp, we would suggest leather gloves for hand protection. We like to hike with our dog, but we don't take him with us (much to his dismay) when we hike into the Big Lava Bed, because the rock may cut his foot pads. Although the cache is less than a half mile from a road, it could take an hour or more, one way, depending on how lucky you are on picking your way through the sink holes and fissures. The cache is an ammo box with yellow lettering, and is in full view above ground. This place is amazing. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. The challenge here is just getting there! Watch your step, be safe, enjoy.
