Pirate Lore consists of legends, music, oral history, popular beliefs, fairy tales, stories, tall tales, and customs that were told by pirates and sailors around the world. These stories offers many an adventurer a chance to learn more about the world around them while spinning tales of thrill, adventure, and danger with salty old seadogs. Many lores were made over time; some of which would be believed to be not more than legend.
As long as man has ventured on the waters of the world, piracy has existed. There were Asian pirates and African pirates, South American pirates, French Pirates, English pirates and Dutch pirates. It seems that every group of men on earth has at one time or another had a fringe element of society that was drawn to piracy.
The allure of piracy was many fold. To some it was an escape from a world where they had very few options in life. A man of low station and no family could make a way for himself at sea, where there was none on land. Some were drawn by the promise of great fortunes, and there were great fortunes made, by even the lowest of sailors who sailed with the right captain. Some did not volunteer, but were pressed into sailing under the black.
Some pirates were guilty of crimes that were truly horrible, some not so much. The truth is most pirates avoided killing and encouraged would be prizes to surrender without a fight. Most passengers on those vessels thought this a good idea. But the stories of easy plunder of soap, rigging and a few baubles are not the stuff of legend and disappear in time. What is left are the tales of outlandish and amazing pirates, involved in adventures that ignite the imagination and last through history.
