Fleetwood Mac is probably best known for the lineup that included Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks but they were successful veterans of the music business ten years prior to the release of 'Rumors' in 1977. Their first two (Fleetwood Mac and Mr. Wonderful) albums were released in 1968 and following the release of their third (Then Play On) album, 1969 saw the appearance of 'Oh Well' released as a single. 'Oh Well' has been viewed by some critics as an early crossover between blues rock and heavy metal. It reached No 2 on the UK Charts, ranged from No 1 to No 10 throughout Europe, and was Fleetwood Mac's first single to make it into Billboard's top 100. Oh Well has since become a rock standard that has been covered by dozens of top performers and has influenced countless others around the world. Part of Oh Well's success is its simplicity of composition. It features a fast blues guitar riff and only two verses of lyrics.
I can't help about the shape I'm in
I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to
Now, when I talked to God, I knew He'd understand
He said, "Stick by my side and I'll be your guiding hand
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to"
Oh, well
