The Jeep Travel Bug was one of the very first branded Geocaching promotions. This promotion was also the very first time that digital icons were introduced on the geocaching profiles. There were originally over 24,000 Jeep Travel Bugs released over a 4 year period. These travel bugs were all attached to Matchbox toy cars in 4 different color batches over the 4 years.
This all started in 2004 with the release of 5,000 Yellow Jeep Travel Bugs after the wildly sucessful locationless cache Yellow Jeep Fever by CBX2. The Yellow Jeep Travel Bugs were only given numbers to destinguish them from each other, this was the only year that these Travel Bugs were given numbers.
This was followed in 2005 by the release of 4,999 White Jeep Travel Bugs. During the White Jeep release these Travel Bugs were given randon names starting with A and going through Z. Chances are there is a White Jeep travel bug that has your name on it. All Yellow and White Jeep TBs are owned by Jeep4x4
In 2006 the Green Jeep Travel Bug was debued with 5,997 bugs released. These Travel Bugs were all given names of off road Jeep roads, Peaks, Mountains, Hills, and a few National Monuments. All Green Jeep Travel Bugs are owned by Jeep4x4_2006
Then the last round of Official Jeep Travel Bugs were released in 2007. There were 8,000 released this year all being Red Jeep Travel Bugs. All of these Jeep Travel Bugs were named after rivers and creeks.
I currently have 22 of these Jeep Travel Bugs, that I am releasing at this event. It seems fitting to release these Travelbugs at the self proclaimed Jeep Capital of the World, Ouray, Colorado. Attendees to this event will be able to log all 4 colors of Jeep Travelbus (Minimum of 3 of each color), which qualifies you for a multitude of challenge caches that revolve around these trackables.
This event will take place at the Gazebo in Fellin Park. Parking is located nearby, and there is a level sidewalk from the listed parking coordinates to the gazebo. The gazebo is covered, so this event will take place rain or shine. Hopefully some of these trackables will make their way into the mountains that are nearby after the event! Hope to see you there!
