Walk through the stone portal and end up...where? I've always been fascinated with the stone wall that follows the road to Highland Cemetery, but I've never been able to figure out why this gateway was here. Highland Cemetery, established in 1875, is one of three in Winfield, overlooking the town from the south on a bluff near the old railroad bridge. It contains a turn-of-the-century mausoleum which has provided many young residents of Winfield with a source of thrills and chills. The road leading to the cemetery is not heavily travelled, but there may be some curves where visibility is reduced, so be careful when parking on the shoulder. Look for a green matchstick holder with only a log sheet. Sorry, no prize for the First to Find other than the joy of exploring this lovely cemetery.
