W ovvero “Veronesi e Veronesità”, una serie di cache che, dedicata a personaggi, luoghi e tradizioni più o meno noti, si propone di farli conoscere o riscoprire attraverso un “Geo-itinerario” il quale, non so ancora bene dove mi/ci porterà, ma vuole essere una dichiarazione d’Amore per Verona, la mia città, il suo territorio e le persone che, ciascuno a proprio modo, l’hanno “celebrata” con la propria vita prima ancora che con le loro gesta, piccole o grandi che siano.
W7 – Roberto Puliero e “La Barcaccia”
Nato il 5 Agosto 1946 Roberto Fernando Puliero è attore e regista teatrale, comico umoristico e satirico, poeta, cantore, insegnante di Lettere in pensione e giornalista… ho dimenticato qualche cosa? Ah sì… naturalmente veronese!
Il teatro, ovvero la forma d’arte più vicina alla realtà, è il suo amore assoluto che iniziò a praticare fin da piccolo negli allestimenti parrocchiali, quando era un bambino dai biondi boccoli e che poi proseguì negli anni del liceo sicché le varie compagnie lo scritturavano spesso, fino a quando nel 1969 fu tra i fondatori della Compagnia Teatrale “La Barcaccia” che quest’anno, nel 2019, festeggia i 50 anni di attività; operante in particolare, ma non esclusivamente, nel Veronese ed in Veneto la compagnia annovera nel proprio repertorio numerose produzioni originali e “testi classici”, oltre alla continua ricerca di novità assolute. Nel linguaggio teatrale, con il termine barcaccia ci si riferisce alla serie di palchetti posti immediatamente a lato del palcoscenico che consentono di ammirare gli artisti a pochi metri di distanza, quasi come se ci si trovasse con loro sul palco.
Come raccontato dallo stesso Puliero in una recente intervista, nei primi anni di attività la compagnia allestiva gli spettacoli con spese totalmente a carico degli stessi teatranti, in una stalla dismessa presa in affitto nel “Rione Filippini” vicino alla vecchia dogana sull’Adige, in un crescendo di recite, favore di critica e notorietà che oggi arriva fino a diciottomila spettatori a stagione nella sola città.
Se da un lato “La Barcaccia” può avere il legittimo rammarico per un rapporto discontinuo con il teatro veronese per eccellenza, ovvero il Teatro Romano, dall’altro a Puliero e alla sua compagnia va il grande merito di aver saputo ricercare e valorizzare numerosi nuovi spazi: cortili, ville castelli… in città in particolare sono stati riscoperti, reinventandoli a teatro all’aperto e data così loro nuova vita, “Cortile Mercato Vecchio”, il “Vecchio Cortile Montanari” e più recentemente l’“Arsenale Franz Joseph I”, per i veronesi semplicemente l’Arsenale; cantori della più genuina veronesità, ma non solo, gli artisti de “La Barcaccia” mettono in scena la vita, soprattutto quella popolare, coinvolgendo gli spettatori e con i personaggi proposti, divertenti o drammatici che siano, offrono spunti di riflessione e confronto, oltre naturalmente a tante e tante risate grasse e spensierate.
Attraverso trasmissioni televisive locali, Roberto Puliero è entrato dagli anni ’80 in tutte le case dei veronesi con il suo TG satirico “Gran Torcolada” dove, con caricature e travestimenti, prendeva sarcasticamente di mira i personaggi reali e reinventati della vita politica, sociale e sportiva della città e della provincia, oltre a personaggi di fantasia come Elvis Ciurla “Tifoso della Curva”, Gennaro Caputon (omissis), Gustavo Lapearà “Tifoso della Bra”, Marcusini Gigiotto “Reduce del ‘68”, Don Bortolon “Parroco di Cavaion” e altri ancora, in una sorta di caleidoscopico cabaret d’altri tempi per una satira libera, scanzonata e pungente, mai volgare; insomma una voce alternativa alla diffusa omologazione delle idee.
Per i tifosi veronesi di calcio e non solo, Roberto Puliero è anche per definizione “La Voce” radiocronista storica delle partite dell’Hellas Verona e lo è tutt’oggi; il battesimo avvenne con i vicini “magnagati” in un Hellas Verona-L.R.Vicenza dell’11 Settembre 1977 che finì 0-0, il Vicenza di Paolo Rossi; la prima trasferta 15 giorni dopo nella fraterna Firenze, dove l’Hellas vinse 1-2 con gol di Emiliano Mascetti “Il Capitano” e Pierluigi Busatta vicentino di Marostica e da allora il suo grido “Reteeeee!” ha entusiasmato intere generazioni del popolo gialloblu.
Agli inizi trasmetteva in mezzo al pubblico, in trasferta si metteva sul gradone più in alto tra i tifosi di casa e per questo è stato davvero un pioniere perché in certi campi capitava anche che fosse l’unico dei media presenti, l’unica fonte… una specie di “fuorilegge”; una volta volevano perfino farlo arrestare, accadde a Pisa con il vulcanico presidente Romeo Anconetani, ma fu soprattutto a Belgrado che se la vide davvero brutta, era il 28 Settembre 1983, durante la partita di ritorno dell’allora Coppa UEFA: lo circondarono e cominciarono a spingerlo, ma per fortuna i giornalisti Germano Mosconi e Adalberto Scemma riuscirono a portarlo in tribuna stampa, con la polizia slava che però gli proibì di proseguire la radiocronaca perché, testuale: “disturbava la quiete pubblica”… il risultato della partita?

Le radiocronache di Roberto Puliero sono spettacolo puro, obiettive il più possibile, ma ironiche; da casa sembra che urli, in realtà usa le sue tecniche teatrali e tra i più bei complimenti ricevuti ci sono certamente quelli di qualche vecchietta o di qualche signora che gli diceva: “Non capisso niente de balon, ma me godo lo stesso”.

W or "Veronesi and Veronesità", a series of caches dedicated to characters, places and traditions more or less known that aims to make them known or rediscover through a "Geo-route" which, I still do not know where it will take me/us, but wants to be a declaration of Love for Verona, my city, its territory and the people who, each in their own way, have "celebrated" it with their own life even before their deeds, small or great that they are.
W7 – Roberto Puliero and “La Barcaccia”
Born 5th August 1946 Roberto Fernando Puliero is an actor and theater director, humorous and satirical comedian, poet, cantor, retired Literature teacher and journalist... have I forgotten anything? Oh yes... veronese of course!
The theater, that is the art form closest to reality, is his absolute love that he began to practice from an early age in the parish productions, when he was a child with blond curls and then continued in his high school years so that the various companies they often signed up, until in 1969 he was among the founders of the Theater Company "La Barcaccia" which this year, in 2019, celebrates 50 years of activity; operating in particular, but not exclusively, in the Veronese country and Veneto region, the company counts in its repertoire numerous original productions and "classic texts", in addition to the continuous search for absolute novelties. In theatrical language, the term barcaccia refers to the series of boxes placed immediately next to the stage that allow artists to be admired just a few meters away, almost as if you were with them on stage.
As told by Puliero himself in a recent interview, in the first years of activity the company set up the shows at the expense of the actors themselves, in a disused stable rented in the "Filippini district" near the old customs on the Adige, with continuous growth of performances, favor of criticism and notoriety that today reaches up to eighteen thousand spectators per season in the city alone.
If on the one hand "La Barcaccia" can have the legitimate regret for a discontinuous relationship with the Veronese theater par excellence, that is the Roman Theater, on the other to Puliero and his company goes the great merit of having been able to research and exploit numerous new spaces: courtyards, villas, castles... in the city in particular they have been rediscovered, reinventing them to open-air theater and thus giving them new life, "Cortile Mercato Vecchio", the "Vecchio Cortile Montanari" and more recently the "Arsenale Franz Joseph I ", for the Veronese simply the Arsenal; cantors of the most genuine Veronese, the artists of "La Barcaccia" stage life, especially the popular one, involving the spectators and with the proposed characters, whether amusing or dramatic, they offer hints for reflection and comparison, in addition of course to many and so many big and carefree laughter.
Through local television broadcasts, Roberto Puliero has entered the Veronese houses since the 1980s with his satirical Newscast "Gran Torcolada" where he took aim, with caricatures and disguises, the real and reinvented characters of political, social and sport life of the city and the province, as well as fictional characters, in a sort of kaleidoscopic cabaret of the past for a free, easygoing and pungent satire, never rude; in short, an alternative voice to the widespread homologation of ideas.
For the Verona football fans and not only, Roberto Puliero is also by definition "The Voice" as historical radio commentator of Hellas Verona matches and is still today; the baptism took place with the neighbors "magnagati" (“Cat eaters” literally in english, this is how in Verona we call the "cousins" of Vicenza goliardically) in a Hellas Verona-L.R.Vicenza of 11th September 1977 that ended 0-0, the Vicenza of Paolo Rossi; the first away match 15 days later in the fraternal Florence, where Hellas won 1-2 with goals from Emiliano Mascetti "The Captain" and Pierluigi Busatta from Vicenza of Marostica... since then his shout "Reteeeee!", the english “Goooaaal!”, has thrilled entire generations of the yellow and blue supporters.
At the beginning he broadcasted in the audience, when reporting the away matches he put himself on the highest step among the home fans and for this reason he was indeed a pioneer because in some fields he even happened to be the only one of the media present, the only source... a kind of "outlaws"; once they wanted to have him arrested, it happened in Pisa with the volcanic president Romeo Anconetani, but it was above all in Belgrade when he saw himself really threatened, it was 28th September 1983, during the return match at that time UEFA Cup: he went surrounded and began to push him, but fortunately the journalists Germano Mosconi and Adalberto Scemma managed to take him to the press area, with the Slavic police who forbade him to continue the commentary because, text: "disturbed the public peace"... the result of the match?

Roberto Puliero's radio commentaries are pure spectacle, as objective as possible, but ironic; from home it seems to scream, in reality he uses his theatrical techniques and among the finest compliments received there are certainly those of some old woman or some lady who said to him: "I don’t understand anything about football, but I enjoy it anyway".
Roberto Puliero passed away in Verona on 19th November 2019...
