This is my first of 5 caches I've hidden in and around the Middleton area. It is a straightforward offset multi-cache. The coordinates here will take you to Middleton Garden of Remembrance. You will then need to solve the puzzle below to identify the coordinates of the actual cache, which is a short distance away. You will be looking for a black magnetic nano.
*Update 3 November 2019: The Memorial Garden appears to be locked outside usual daylight hours. I've struggled to find out the exact opening times, but it appears to be open 7 days a week from dawn to dusk.*
Middleton Garden of Remembrance was unveiled in 1927 to commemorate the dead of World War I, with additional work undertaken after World War II. The memorial comprises four panels set in a semi-circular arrangement and comemmorating the fallen of World War I, with two further panels dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War II. The war memorial was Grade II listed in 2013, recognising it as a structure of architectural interest.
In 1927 part of the grounds of Park Field house, a 19th century villa on the north side of Manchester Old Road was formally presented to the borough of Middleton. The land was used to create a garden of remembrance to commemorate the 647 men from Middleton who had lost their lives serving during the First World War. After the Second World War the names of a further 286 local men who had lost their lives were added to low curved walls on both sides of the original cenotaph. The garden was laid out with formal paths, high boundary walls and an open loggia to the rear flanking the war memorial. The decorative iron gates to the main entrance were presented in 1949. In 2000 renovation work reinstated a dolphin fountain on the south side of the memorial which had been lost for over 30 years.
Start by walking to the central part of the memorial (as in the main image here), directly below the cenotaph itself. The information required is contained only on this central section of the semi-circular memorial, which commemorates those who lost their lives, starting with 'Glynn' and ending with 'Royle'.
