Geocache Description:

This is a straightforward puzzle cache: you simply need to follow the link below to complete a jigsaw which will then reveal the coordinates for this cache. Be sure to write the coordinates down! The coordinates above will take you to the front of St Leonard's Church, Middleton but the cache isn't located there. It's a short walk away.

The parish church of St Leonard's in Middleton lays claim to being one of the oldest inhabited buildings in the Manchester area. Some of the church's features date back to the Saxon era. It contains the Flodden memorial window, celebrating the Middleton Archers who participated in the Battle of Flodden (1513) during the Anglo-Scottish wars. The church is usually open between 9.15 and 12pm Mon-Thu for visitors who wish to see the window.

Across the street from the Old Boar's Head Inn in Middleton you will find Jubilee Park. Jubilee Park was opened in 1889 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Today it comprises 11.6 acres in the heart of Middleton's Conservation Area. In 1906 local architect Edgar Wood was commissioned to design a flight of steps to lead up to a contemplation spot in the park. This is known as an Exedra, a room, portico, or arcade with a bench or seats where people may converse, common in ancient Roman and Greek buildings.

John Archer describes the steps as follows: "Wood designed a fine monumental staircase leading to the church and on the axis of the tower, thus increasing its dramatic effect. At one level of the staircase he placed a fountain, consisting of a graceful pedestal and a wide, shallow bowl surmounted by a small statue. Judging from a photograph it was a charming feature popular with children."
