The present church building opened in 1902 as Heaton United Methodist Church, though the Society had its roots in the Wesleyan Reformers, dating back to 1850.
In 1932, when the three branches of Methodism, Wesleyan, Primitive and United came together the church was renamed Heaton Methodist Church and in 1935 was placed in the Heaton and Wallsend Circuit.
Renovation work was carried out in 1950 and recently extensive regenerative work has been carried out to modernise and make fit for use in the present age. Maintenance work on both building and garden has always been an ongoing process, made possible by the dedication and generosity of successive generations of members.
In 2009, as the Heaton and Wallsend Circuit contracted it seemed advisable to amalgamate with Brunswick Central and so Heaton is now part of the newly named Circuit, Newcastle Central and East.
