A Caloura

“O lugar da Caloura, na ilha de São Miguel, ocupa uma extensa fajã lávica formada há cerca de 3500 anos por escoadas basálticas emitidas do cone de escórias da Ermida da Nossa Senhora do Monte Santo e de cones adjacentes. A arriba fóssil resultante pode ser observada na zona do porto da Caloura-Miradouro do Pisão (a nascente) e na Baixa da Areia, a poente. Na primeira, é constituída sobretudo por espessas escoadas traquíticas associadas ao Vulcão do Fogo, enquanto que a poente são as escoadas e piroclastos basálticos que predominam. O litoral da fajã apresenta-se muito recortado, com enseadas e baías pouco profundas, ilhéus, rochedos isolados e grutas litorais e submarinas. Na Ponta da Galera existem diversas poças de maré e piscinas naturais. Dos miradouros do Pisão e do Monte Santo, sobranceiros à vila de Água de Pau, tem-se uma vista privilegiada sobre o geossítio, o qual apresenta um microclima propício à produtividade dos terrenos e que reforça as condições para spot de veraneio! Este é um geossítio do Geoparque Açores com relevância regional e interesse e uso científico, económico, educacional e geoturístico”.

“Caloura”

 “Caloura, on the island of São Miguel, occupies an extensive lava basin formed about 3500 years ago by basaltic flows emitted from the slag cone of the Nossa Senhora do Monte Santo Chapel and adjacent cones. The resulting fossil cliff can be observed in the port area of ​​Caloura-Miradouro do Pisão (east) and in Baixa da Areia, west. In the first one, it consists mainly of thick trachitic flows associated with the Fogo Volcano, while to the west are the predominant basalt flows and pyroclasts. The fajã coast is very jagged, with shallow coves and bays, islets, isolated cliffs and coastal and underwater caves. In Ponta da Galera there are several tide pools and natural pools. From the viewpoints of Pisão and Monte Santo, overlooking the village of Água de Pau, you have a privileged view of the geosite, which presents a microclimate conducive to land productivity and which reinforces the conditions for summer spot! This is a geosite of the Azores Geopark with regional relevance and interest and scientific, economic, educational and geotouristic use ”.
