2 maggio 1918, il dirigibile di tipo floscio U.5 era alla sua 69esima ascensione e per la settima volta era comandato dal tenente Federico Fenu. Era una giornata di massima limpidezza e senza vento, quando l’U.5 uscì dall'hangar dell'aeroscalo di Pontedera. La missione consisteva nel servizio di osservazione dei sottomarini nemici nel Tirreno e di pattugliamento ai piroscafi della linea Civitavecchia-La Spezia. L'equipaggio era composto anche dal tenente Enrico Magistris, dal sottotenente Luigi Carta Satta, dal sottocapo radiotelegrafista Michele Rosato e dal sottocapo motorista Tommaso Perrone. La missione si svolse in maniera del tutto regolare e sulla rotta di ritorno, verso le ore 12,45, il dirigibile navigava sulla Toscana sul cielo di Castellina Marittima a una quota di 300 metri di altezza, l'equipaggio era tranquillo e stava consumando la colazione. D'un tratto l'involucro si piegò a V, rompendosi in tre parti. La navicella, libera da ogni sostegno, precipitò a terra in località Valdiperga formando una grande buca, in essa furono trovati i corpi dei cinque membri dell'equipaggio, deceduti sul colpo. Alcuni di loro furono rinvenuti ancora con il cibo in bocca, data la rapidità con cui si era svolta la tragedia. Pochi mesi dopo, in loro ricordo, sul luogo della catastrofe, fu eretto un monumento a spese del Comune di Castellina Marittima . Peccato che la manutenzione del monumento non sia delle migliori.

2 May 1918, the U.5 airship was at its 69th ascension and was commanded by Lieutenant Federico Fenu for the seventh time. It was a day of maximum clarity and no wind, when the U.5 came out of the hangar of the Pontedera airfield. The mission consisted in the observation service of enemy submarines in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The crew was also composed of Lieutenant Enrico Magistris, Lieutenant Luigi Carta Satta, the radiotelegraph director sub-director Michele Rosato and the engine sub-director Tommaso Perrone. The mission took place in a completely regular manner and on the return route, around 12.45, the airship was sailing over Tuscany on the Castellina Marittima sky at an altitude of 300 meters, the crew was calm and was consuming the Breakfast. Suddenly the envelope folded to V, breaking into three parts. The spacecraft, free from any support, fell to the ground in the locality of Valdiperga forming a large hole, where the bodies of the five crew members were found, who died instantly. Some of them were still found with food in their mouths, given the speed with which the tragedy took place. A few months later, in their memory, at the site of the catastrophe, a monument was erected at the expense of the Municipality of Castellina Marittima. Too bad that the maintenance of the monument is not the best.
