It is near the former manor house after which the location road is named. The manor has recently been converted into a private school for pre-secondary students. The river Wye is said to give the town its name, although this is a matter of dispute amongst antiquarians. The Wye discharges into the Thames at Bourne End not far from the bridge at Cookham. The river is one of the few chalk streams in the world and used to be famous for its brown trout.
