Il borgo di Macugnaga conserva accuratamente la memoria delle sue origini: citato già in un documento scritto del 999 come alpicella, forse dotato di un primo scarno insediamento permanente, è però stato colonizzato a partire dal XIII secolo dal popolo Walser, giunto dalla valle di Saas attraverso il Passo di Monte Moro, che ha plasmato l'intera vallata coi suoi usi, culture e tradizioni. Incamminarsi salendo verso il Moro è quindi risalire lo scorrere dei secoli, alla ricerca delle radici più antiche di questo stupendo paese.
La quinta cache è posizionata nei pressi della statua della Madonna delle nevi, eretta il 5 agosto del 1966 su un risalto roccioso nelle immediate vicinanze del Passo del Monte Moro. La statua, realizzata in bronzo e successivamente ricoperta di lamine d’oro, raffigura la Vergine Maria incoronata di stelle mentre idealmente protegge questo secolare luogo d’incontro tra valli differenti. Facilmente raggiungibile grazie ad una scalinata in metallo, domina dall’alto un magnificente panorama sul sottostante lago Smeraldo, sull’imponente parete est del Monte Rosa,
sulle cime che emergono oltre il Passo del Turlo e, verso nord, sul bacino artificiale di Mattmark e sulle ardite vette delle Alpi Svizzere.
The village of Macugnaga carefully preserves the memory of its origins: already mentioned in a written document of 999 as alpicella, perhaps endowed with a first meager permanent settlement, but it was colonized starting from the XIII century by the Walser people, arrived from the valley of Saas through the Passo di Monte Moro, which has shaped the entire valley with its uses, cultures and traditions. Going up towards the Moor is therefore going back over the centuries, in search of the most ancient roots of this wonderful country.
The fifth cache is located near the statue of the Madonna delle nevi, erected on August 5, 1966 on a rocky prominence in the immediate vicinity of the Passo del Monte Moro. The statue, made of bronze and subsequently covered with gold leaf, depicts the Virgin Mary crowned with stars while ideally protecting this centuries-old meeting place between different valleys. Easily accessible thanks to a metal staircase, it overlooks from above a magnificent panorama of the underlying Smeraldo lake, on the imposing east face of Monte Rosa,
on the peaks that emerge beyond the Passo del Turlo and, towards the north, on the artificial basin of Mattmark and on the bold peaks of the Swiss Alps.
