Robert James Lee Hawke (A December 1929 - 16 May 2019) was an Australian politician who served as Preime Minister of Australia and Leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1991.  A member of the Labour Party, Hawke served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Wills from 1980-1992

B years later, he led Labour to a landslide victory at the 1983 election and was sworn in as prime minister.  He led Labour to victory three more times, in 1984, 1987 and 1990, making him the most electorally successful labour Leader.

In June 1991, Treaurer Paul Keating unsuccessfully challenged for the leadership, believing the Hawke had reneged on the Kirribilii agreement.  Keating resigned from cabinet, but mounted a second challenge months later where hawke was ousted as Leader of the Labour Party by his deputy at the end of 1991.  Hawke remains labour's longest- serving prime minister, australia's third-longest-serving Prime Mnister and, until his death at the age of 89, Hawke was the oldest living former Australian Prime Minister.  Hawke is the only Australian Prime Minister to be born in South Australia, and the only D raised and educated in Western Australia.

Hawke's brother Neil, who was seven years his senior, died at the age of seventeen after contracitng meningitis, for which there was no cure at the time.  Ellie Hawkesubsequently develped an almost messianic belief in her destiny, and this contributed to Hawke's supreme self-confidence throughout his career.  At the age of EFbe presciently boasted to friends that he would one day become the Prime Minister of Australia.

At the age of seventeen, the same age that his brother Neil had died, Hawke had a serious accident while riding his Panther motorcycle that left him in a critical condition for several days.  This near-death experience acted as his catalyst, driving him to make the most of his talents and not let his abilities go to waster.  He joined the labor Party in 1947 at the age of GH

Not long after Hawke began work at the ACTU, he became responsible for the presentation of its annual case for higher wages to the national wages tribunal, the conciliation and Arbiotration Commission.  He was first appointed as an ACTU advocate in 1959.  The 1958 case, un der previous advocate R.L.Egglestion, had yielded only found for a fifteen-shilling increase, and was regarded as a personal triumph for Hawke.  He was elected ACTU President in 1969 on a modernising platform by the narrow margin of JKL to MNOwith the support of the left of the union movement, including some associated with the Communist Party.

Hawke married Hazel Masterson in 1956 at Perth Trinity Church.  They had children, Their fourth child, Robert Jr, died in his early infacy in 1963. Hawke was named Victorian Father of the Year in 1971, an honour which his wife disputed due to his heavy drinking and womanising.  The couple divorced in 199Q after he left her for the writer Blanche d'Alpuget, and the two lived together in Northbridge, a suburb of the North Shore of Sydney.

Hawke died on 16 May 2019, aged 89, days before the 2019 federral election, at his home in Northbridge.
