Geocache Description:

You will marvel at this feature of the Karoo landscape if you ever have to drive down the R56 between Steynsburg and Middleburg.

Why not stop, rest and soak up the sights and sounds that this landscape has to offer. Contact the farm owners and get their permission to hike up these two famous koppies that straddle the R56.

Koffeebus and Teebus owe their existence to a short geological window about 180 million years ago when molten magma forced its way up to the surface of the earth from 100’s of kilometres beneath the surface. This formed narrow layers of dolerite ( sills )  which being harder than their surrounds formed hard caps which today give us these typical Karoo features.

This cache is placed on the slopes of Teebus ( as opposed to the top ) - in order to reach it you will not have to scale the last vertical 50 metres of the koppie. If you decide to go all the way to the top then it is strongly suggested you take someone who has done it before. You will not only require a serious head for heights but also proper climbing gear ( ropes / harnesses etc ) should be carried.

To reach the cache site will take about an hour up and the same down. It is relatively easy to circumnavigate the summit at a level slightly below that of where the cache will be found. The cache container is a small four sided lockable plastic box which has been concealed in a way that will hopefully survive the baboons who like to hang around there. Please bear this in mind when replacing it where you find it. It will be large enough for very small trades etc.

There are a couple of other caches in close proximity which are worth investigating. Koffiebus ( GC39YT1 ) is located on the neighbouring koppie which is much easier to reach the top of. However check the staus of the cache as recently it was missing and it needs maintenance. Another one Orange-Fish river tunnel outlet ( GCT398 ) will give you an interesting insight into an extraordinary engineering project about 1.5 kms down the road.

In order to climb the koppie please obtain permission from Wilemien Gibbons (0729967150 / teebusview@gmail.com ). She will also be able to direct you in the right direction about permission to climb Koffeebus, the route up Teebus and where to stay in the vicinity should you decide to enjoy the local Karoo llifestyle and hospitality.

Have fun and remember - take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints !
