Cache is at the Rhode Island mine, #1 shaft. #2 and #3 are across road and north of Rhode Island Road (and firmly entrenched on private property). Fenced in area is the partially capped shaft. There are some crumbling remains of the hoist house, but it (and the rock pile) are not on REA's property.
3 shafts, deepest the #1 at 140’. The “old” Rhode Island Mining Co was organized in 1860 and worked with Albany and Boston Mining Co. Closed in 1865 after little copper found. After copper boom of 1898, “new” Rhode Island Mining Co organized in 1899 and work resumed until 1906. Taken over by Franklin Mining Co. in 1910, worked sporadically until 1920 when mine closed for good.
