South Country History: Vantage Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

onecrazycanadian: Hi biology_geek

In your last note you indicated that the cache would be enabled when spring arrived. Since the cache has remained disabled over the summer and fall I cannot let it go any longer. Consequently I am archiving the cache at this time as I cannot let it remain disabled any longer.

Thanks

Geocache Description:

The South Country History Series is a new series of geocaches being placed at locations of rural schools, churches, cemeteries, cenotaphs, and former townsites in south central Saskatchewan.

From the plaque at this former townsite: "Like most prairie communities, Vantage was the area's social and business focus. The Canadian Pacific ran the first train to Vantage in 1914. The post office opened a year later, closing in 19778. School began in 1917, closin in 1966. Dewdrop Rural Telephone Company esisted from 1915-1977. Vantage's population peaked at 100, near the end of a building boom in 1924. Fires were common with wooden buildings. Undamaged buildings were reused many times for various businesses. Vantage included: four grain elevators; livery barns; dray services; two lumber yards; oil companies; machinery dealers; garage; two general stores; butcher shops; cafes; srug store; pool hall; barber shop; laundry; bank; theatre; dance hall; hotel; blacksmith; shoemaker; doctor; curling rink; rooming houses & two churches."

The only thing that remains of Vantage today is Mitch's Meats, a butcher shop located on the highway.
