Geocache Description:

#6 in the Newport Canal series

Kingfisher Canal gives water access to even numbered houses on Southern Cross Drive and odd numbered houses on Australia Court. Deep water access is via Albatross canal and out into Moreton Bay.

Southern Cross is a 12-metre class racing yacht constructed by Perth entrepreneur, Alan Bond, in WA and designed by Australian, Ben Lexcen.  Southern Cross is 68 feet (20.7m) long, weighs 32 tonnes and has a 97 feet (29.5m) high mast. It was the first aluminium yacht to compete in the America's Cup. Although unsuccessful in beating the Americans in the 1974 America's Cup, Southern Cross did beat the competing nations to win the right to challenge for the cup. Southern Cross is still sailing today in Queensland.

Kingfishers are plump mostly short-tailed birds with large heads and oversized bills. Typical kingfishers, such as the Azure kingfisher, feed by hovering or diving into water, however most Australian kingfishers, including the Kookaburra, live in forests and feed by pouncing on prey from a perch. With its combination of royal-blue plumage on its upperparts contrasting with orange on its underparts, the Azure Kingfisher is one of the smallest and most dazzling kingfishers in Australia. This diminutive species inhabits the vegetation beside waterways and other wetlands, where it often perches on low, overhanging branches, searching for its prey of fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects, captured by shallow plunging into the water. Anglers on lonely rivers are sometimes surprised to find an Azure Kingfisher perched quietly on their fishing rods instead of a branch.

The cache is in a small park at the end of Kingfisher Canal along Newport Drive, with a few seats and shady trees. You are looking for a shiny hanging bison. Stealth is paramount as there are close neighbours at both ends of the park.
