The "Morris Canal History Tour" series of caches are placed along the canal towpath in partnership with the Waterloo Village Historic Site and the Canal Society of New Jersey to showcase the important early transportation across New Jersey. The Morris Canal connected the Delaware and Hudson Rivers and facilitated development of cities and industry in New York and New Jersey.

Once a busy port on the Morris Canal, this site was at different times known as Stourport, Byram, and Starport. During the second half of the 19th century it was bustling with the industrial and warehouse operations of James Frenche, who shipped his goods on the canal. Stone ruins of his buildings still remain along the canal and on the adjacent hillside.

Canal Towpath at Starport

A bridge formerly crossed the canal here, carrying a road that crossed the Musconetcong River and led to the nearby Sussex Railroad Station in Mount Olive.
