Cachesaurous Presents

The Lucan Library

Welcome to the Lucan Library.

Todays cache can offer you shelter from the weather and a few comfortable chairs to enjoy a book in! Come only when the library is open! Please sign the log, and return as you found. Do not leave Trackables in this cache, too risky with so muggles around. There is room for some small swag!

The Lucan Library first opened in 1877 when a group of citizens met to arrange some form of entertainment for the winter months.

This assembly of 15 people formed an association and membership fees began at $1.00 for the gentlemen and free for the ladies.

Soon after they affiliated themselves with Mechanics’ Institute, this opened the opportunity for grants and further growth.

At the time the Mechanics’ institute had already been formed in Great Britain in the 1920’ with the goal to educate the working class. This idea spread to Canada and opened the first institute in Montreal 1828. The Mechanics institute soon became unfeasible to maintain its class’s labs and museums and all that remained was the libraries.

Over the years fees slowly increased to pay for staff and supplies. Locations also changed as needs required.

In 1898 with the assistance from the village council they became “The Lucan Library Association” and the collection grew with help through grants from the province and county. It was still privately owned by the members.

In 1962 a bylaw can was passed by the village to convert the privately operated Lucan Library Association into the municipally owned Lucan Public Library and the following year became a branch of the Middlesex county library.
