Citata come Stagiano, Staciano e Staziano in documenti del IX e X secolo, ha origini più antiche: i primi insediamenti nella zona risalgono, infatti, a epoca romana, stando al rinvenimento di vari reperti archeologici e all'etimologia del toponimo, derivante dal nome latino di persona STATIUS, con l'aggiunta del suffisso -anus. In quel periodo dovette rivestire una certa rilevanza, grazie alla sua ubicazione lungo la strada militare che collegava Bergamo a Milano. Dotata di fortificazioni, nel corso del Medioevo fu travagliata dalle lotte tra i guelfi e i ghibellini, venendo distrutta dai primi agli inizi del XV secolo. Sotto la dominazione veneziana registrò una ripresa economica, legata allo sviluppo delle attività agricole e in particolare della gelsicoltura e della bachicoltura, ulteriormente sviluppatesi nell'Ottocento.
