Geocache Description:

Welcome to the geocache “Orpener”

Information about the geocache

This cache is located on the back of a street sign… how original. The cache is a simple Nano container with only a log book inside so BYOP (Bring Your Own Pen) I was wondering if to add parking Co-ords as you can near enough park at GZ but it’s no harm adding some in anyway. The reason I have placed a cache here is just to fill in a gap in the geocaching map, there’s nothing special about this cache.

Please note: this cache is in a residential area and please be respectful to residents. Also please be discrete if there any muggles present.

Information about the area

This geocache is located in the Orpen estate of Finaghy (or as some call it Ballyfinaghy but Finaghy is a shortened term.) Other estates in the Finaghy area:

  • Erinvale
  • Locksley
  • Trossachs
  • Taughmonagh
  • Benmore
  • Upper Malone

The name “Ballyfinaghy” comes from the Irish Gaelic “Baile an Fhionnachaidh and that translates as “the white field” There is also a coffee shop called “white fields” and this is dedicated to the history of Finaghy. A  Presbyterian church was founded in Finaghy in 1936 and the population of Finaghy started to grow.

One thing you may notice, Finaghy has no pubs or book makers (betting shops), this is because by this time there were a large number of churches and the churches disagreed to the building of bars and book makers.

I have written a little bit about the history of Finaghy from my knowledge and some references, but you may read more and I highly recommend you do so via these links:

Getting to this cache

You can use almost every mode of transport to this cache, I recommend driving and/or walking but you can cycle or use public transport and walk.

You can park your car at the recommended parking coordinates but please note if this spot is taken there is ample car parking space on the street.

For public transport you can take metro bus 8A, 8B, 8C, 9A, or Lisburn bound Ulsterbuses. The cache is no longer than a 15 minutes walk away from the bus stop.

Finally, if you have a question/problem with the cache don't hesitate to contact me

Thanks and good luck.
