Welcome to the Story so Far...
This is a bonus cache for those intrepid travellers who have completed Adventure Lab ‘Cairns: A Brief History’ and like their historical education with a ☺on the side. To complete the Adventure Lab, you will need to download the Adventure Lab app to your smart phone, then 'Search this Area'. Adventure Labs are not displayed on the Geocaching map. (Please note, Lab Adventure WP3 is only available between 6am-7pm 7 days/week.) So, having done this...
If you have planned ahead, you should have already found the answers for the following while completing the Adventure Lab. If not, you might need to go for another brief adventure. Please note, there are TWO sets of questions to answer - one set for the waypoints of the Adventure, to be answered as you go. The other set, also collected at the Adventure Lab waypoints, gives the position of the bonus cache. These questions are NOT interchangeable. (Visitors to Cairns particularly, please also note, that this cache is subject to restricted opening hours (10am - 4pm Mon - Sat, 10am - 2pm Sun.) Apologies for any disappointment this may cause - if this affects you, please contact the CO.)
Bonus cache questions to answer:
A = The number of the shield that represents ‘50,000 years of living in harmony’.
B = The number of auspicious symbols depicted that are living (natural) things.
C = The month the plaque was unveiled (look inside the building for this).
D = The decade that Cairns embarked on sewering the entire city 19?8 (Hint - take the scenic route from the railway to the port via Spence & Lake St's and read the United Plumbing information sign to find this one)
E = The number of hand operated cranes originally purchased.
F = The decade the site was allocated to the Cairns Divisional Board (18?9)
Now that you've had the brief history of Cairns, at the coords below you will find the rest of the story (so far):
S16˚55.ABC E145˚46.DEF
To find your last ☺you will need to put on your geocaching eyes and go inside. Look for a familiar sight and the cache will be close at hand. You should not need to ask for assistance in locating the prize.
Permission has been granted for the placement of this cache. This is a very busy area so please be discreet and respectful of the location. There's room for small swaps only and BYOP just in case. Thanks for joining us on our Adventure tour of Cairns CBD.
If you still haven't had enough history, details of two self-guided walks through Cairns' historic buildings can be found below, as well as a history of streets and suburbs in the area. Thank you again to Cairns Historical Society for the photos and assistance and thanks to everyone for their feedback so far. Congratulations to Fullboar for the FTF on the Adventure Lab & bonus caches!
Enjoy your time in Cairns and Happy Caching!
