Geocache Description:

I have been walking the Te Araroa Trail (I started in September 2019) and wanted to place a geocache on the way. I thought about placing one at the summit of the Raetea Forest way up north, because it was gruelling but had a great view at the top. However, I wouldn't be able to maintain it up in Northland.

As I was walking through the Karamu Walkway section of the trail, I really liked the bush section, and so I decided it to place it there. This point is where I stopped for a break and I decided to place a cache here because it was a nice spot. And it's close to where my family live so maintenance will be easier.

Sadly it's only a micro, because I wouldn't have been able to carry anything larger from Cape Reinga. But I hope you enjoy finding it anyway. Bring your own pen, and no room for trackables or swaps.

Walkway through the bush

You can park off Fillery Road, at the posted parking coordinates. From there it is through farmland - please keep to the white markers. After the farm there is a hike up a moderate hill through a forest to the cache - follow the orange markers through the bush.

Follow the orange markers

Alternatively, you can park on Old Mountain Road. It's a less gruelling walk but a fair bit longer and not as well marked. There are many walkways from this parking spot so be sure to follow the right one.

The cache should be an easy find. The reason that it's difficulty 2 is that you may encounter either bulls or cows with calves depending on the time of year. I encountered both, but neither of them caused me any problems.

Here's my blog of my Te Araroa journey.
