Geocache Description:

A traditional cache placed near to the church of St Philip and St James at Escot. The cache is on a public footpath and cannot be accessed from within the churchyard.

Escot Church

This church was originally within the parish of Ottery St Mary and consecrated in 1840. By 1844 the church was taken out of this parish and remained independent until 1958 when it joined the parish of Clyst Hydon and Clyst St Lawrence. Further reorganisation in 1989 linked the church with the parish of Feniton and Buckerell. Anyone would think that this church was unloved because yet another reorganisation in 2005 when a Rector was appointed to oversee several parishes under the Otter Vale Team Ministry.

Unfortunately the church is usually locked but if you have the chance to look inside make sure you do! The stained glass is relatively modern yet ornate. The East window has a dove which was in a poor state of repair for many years. This was restored in 2014 using new glass, the original pieces will one day form part of a display somewhere.

You can get here from all directions. If you are coming by car it is best to approach from the south, if cycling or walking you can approach from any of the compass directions. You cannot access the church from the A30 however it is very easy to exit at Fenny Bridges if travelling westbound (or Daisymount if heading eastbound) and follow the old London Road to Fairmile.

The cache is a small clip lock box hidden under two pieces of concrete camouflage. Please take the time to replace the hide as found.
