Geocache Description:

#8 in the Newport Canal series

Pelican Canal gives water access to even numbered houses on Courageous Court. Deep water access is via Albatross canal and out into Moreton Bay.

Courageous is a 12-metre class yacht. It won the America's Cup race twice for the New York Yacht Club, in 1974 and 1977. Courageous was the first all aluminum-hulled 12-metre class yacht. Courageous successfully defended the Cup in 1974 for the US with Ted Hood at the helm. Hood then built a new boat, Independence, which he thought was faster than Courageous, and sold Courageous to Ted Turner. Turner then won the 1977 America's Cup defender trials in Courageous, beating Hood in the process, and then went on to successfully defend the America's Cup against Australia later that year. Courageous is still sailing and racing today in Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

Pelicans are large coastal water birds with a naked pouch under their bills that they use as nets to scoop fish. Of the seven known pelican species, the most common in this area is the Australian Great White pelican. The Australian Pelican is often seen around the coasts, where it can be seen roosting on sandbanks, rock platforms and reefs, or swimming in lagoons, bays and estuarine waters, dipping their oversized bills into the water to catch fish. However, on the rare occasions that monsoonal rains flood the salt lakes in the arid inland of Australia, many pelicans take advantage of the conditions and flock there in their thousands to breed. When it dries out, they leave and head for other less-ephemeral terrestrial wetlands or the coast.

Due to the close proximity of other canal caches, this one is in a large park across the road from Pelican canal along Newport Drive. The park provides many outdoor activities besides geocaching, including a playground, basketball court and picnic facilities. You are looking for a small container hidden by natural camouflage. You will be well away from the muggle activity areas.

Congratulations to Brislions for FTF!!
