Retezat Mountains are located in the western of the South Carpathians, being known by varied flora and myriad lakes.
Lake Gales is located in northeastern part of the Retezat mountains. It is located at an altitude of 1990 m, has an area of 4.5 ha and a maximum depth of 10 meters. By its dimensions Lake Gales ranks fourth among lakes from Retezat, after Bucura, Zănoaga and Negru.
