Geocache Description:

This geocache was placed in honor of a wonderful friend I made from Finland in the summer of 2019.  It was placed on the last day of her visit to Richmond.

Here are some interesting facts, off the top of my head, about Finland:

  1. Santa Klaus' is from Finland and his workshop is there at the Arctic Circle
  2. They call Finland, "Suomi", which contains the word Suo meaning swamp.
  3. It would take you 13 hours to fly to Finland
  4. Finland is actually not considered Scandanavian, however it is considered Nordic.  You could also call the area Fennoscandian.
  5. All political party leaders are currently women as of December 2019
  6. Finland has more islands than anywhere in the world! 200,000+
  7. Every man in Finland must serve in the military or some kind of civil service for at least six months.
  8. Finland has been voted the worlds happiest country for since 2017.
  9. ALL education is free... even PHD's!
  10. Heavy metal is HUGE in Finland. They love it more than anywhere else in the world.
  11. Finland won their independence from Russia in 1917 and was given the peak of their highest mountain on their 100th anniversary
  12. The Finnish will drink you under the table.
  13. There are more Saunas in than cars. They seriously LOVE saunas!
  14. Many Finnish people are very pragmatic and no nonsense.
  15. Many Finnish people believe in Sisu.  Sisu is a uniquely Finnish term that can be roughly translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity.  Sisu is not momentary courage, but the ability to sustain that courage.
  16. Their national religion is Lutheran though not many practice and they pay a 3% tax from their income to support the church voluntary each year.
  17. In the coastal region of Finland, many of the people's first language is Swedish, not Finnish. This is because Finland was once a part of Sweden and when they succeeded, the Swedish language stuck around for Government work. Basically, it was the language of the 'highborn' (think Game of Thrones :-)). That went on until the Fennoman movement, when the Finns said, "No more Swedish influence!". So they made Finnish the national language. Not everyone agreed with the movement, which is why the coastal area's first language is Swedish.
