Geocache Description:

The Kennedy Range is an eroded plateau about 75 km long and up to 25 km wide, located on the rim of the Gascoyne River catchment. Around 250 million years ago the Gascoyne Region was a shallow ocean basin off the edge of the ancient Australian continent. It filled with sediment, which later compressed to form layers of Sandstone and shale. Movements in the Earth's crust brought these above sea level where erosion has stripped away much of the rock.

Ironstone : Sheet-like ironstone layers typically originate by successive phases of iron precipitation along vertical joints or fractures.

Honeycomb Weathering developed from the action of the salt and wind in coastal and semi-arid environments. Some moisture is required, as well as pore spaces, to allow the salt to soak into the rock. After many cycles of wetting and drying, crystallization of salty fluids in a wall of rock loosens the rock grains and they are swept away by wind, leaving an intricate network of small holes and caverns.

Honeycomb Gorge can be accessed as a 600m return (Class 4), 20-40 minute walk from the carpark, or a 45 minute walk from the Temple Gorge campsite. Once you reach GZ, look around at nature at work. When rain occurs, a waterfall forms and a water pond form at the base. Answer the following questions:

Question 1: Explain in your own words how the honeycomb structure has been formed.

Question 2: Estimate the diameter of the smallest and of the largest holes.

Question 3: Look around and you will see other rock features, such as sheet-like rock and vertical marks on the cliff. Describe them and how you think they have been formed
