This is the site of the Onehunga Woollen Mills which is currently under development but which played a large part in the colonial industry of Auckland.
The former Onehunga Woollen Mills were established at Te Papapa in 1886 to manufacture woollen goods for the colony's domestic market, and reinforced Onehunga's early importance as Auckland's west coast port and a centre of heavy industry. Prior to WWI they were also producing material which was then used in the manufacture of uniforms for the military.
Most New Zealanders who grew up in the 20th century will recognise the Onehunga Princess blanket as one they had on their bed and can probably even remember which colour their one was. Many of the older generation will still have some in their house as they literally lasted a lifetime
