Ōhinerau / Mount Hobson (also known as Ōhinerangi and Remuwera) is a 143 m high volcanic cone in the Auckland volcanic field. This area was originally used  by Māori for a pā and later as a quarry and pasture land before having the water reservoir installed in its cone.

Ōhinerau is named after Hinerau, a goddess of whirlwinds and Mount Hobson is named after Captain William Hobson who was the co author of the Treaty of Waitangi. Remuwera was originally the name of a pa site on the hill that was also utilised for kumara and food gardens and this is where the local suburb of Remuera got its name.

Under the 2014 Waitangi Settlement with the Tāmaki Makaurau collective of 13 Auckland iwi it was granted dual naming rights and is now governed by the collective and Auckland Council for common benefit of the iwi and all people of Auckland.

The views from here are stunning and a daylight visit is highly recommended. We did notice a sign on the stile that mentioned that the park may be closed at night due to rabbit shooting. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...safety first.

There are many access points to this area and we found Dilworth Ave the easiest place to park.
