The downy woodpecker is often confused with its larger counterpart, the hairy woodpecker. The downy is smaller - closer to the size of a large chickadee. The hairy is more the size of a robin. Both males have the red splotch on their heads; females do not.
Just before this cache, half of an ancient oak had recently fallen into the river. Luckily, there is just enough room to glide through and snag the cammoed pill bottle just beyond.
