Esta fuente es uno de los iconos de Madrid y seguramente habrás escuchado un montón de información sobre ella. Por eso os voy a contar unas cuantas curiosidades que a mi me sorprendieron.
La diosa Cibeles en la mitologioa griega es la hija del cielo y de la tierra, esposa de Saturno. Diosa de la tierra, la fecundidad y la agricultura; está sentada en un carruaje tirado por leones que representan a Hipómenes y Atalanta. Según la mitología griega, La pasión que mantuvieron estos dos jóvenes provocó la furia de la diosa Cibeles y fueron transformarlos en leones, castigados a no mirarse y obligados a tirar de su carro eternamente. Esta misma pareja de leones son los que guardan la puerta del Congreso de los Diputados.
Donde actualmente se ubica la Plaza Cibeles, en el Siglo XVI era un paseo frondoso que separaba el casco urbano de Madrid de la zona donde estaban los palacios y conventos. Su ubicación es muy singular, esta en el cruce de dos de los ejes más importantes de la ciudad: el Paseo de Recoletos (Norte) y Paseo del Prado (Sur) atravesado por la Callé de Alcalá (la calle más larga de la capital y la tercera calle más larga de España). En las cuatro esquinas de este cruce, nos encontramos con cuatro de los Palacios más importantes de la Ciudad:
- Palacio de Cibeles (O Palacio de Telecominucaciones): Alberga la oficina central de Correos de la Capital así como el Ayuntamiento.
- El Palacio de Linares, conocido en sus primeros años como palacio de Murga, alberga hoy en día la Casa América. Es un consorcio público que tiene como objetivo estrechar los lazos entre España y el continente americano, especialmente con Latinoamérica.
- Palacio de Bellavista, actualmente alberga el Cuartel General del Ejército de Tierra de España. La Fuente Cibeles fue destinada para los jardines del palacio, pero los madrileños le tomaron tanto cariño que se quedó en el lugar actualmente está.
- El Palacio de Alcañices, la sede principal del Banco de España. La Diosa Cibeles está muy custodiada pues resguarda el oro de la Reserva Española. A 54 metros de profundidad se haya la cámara acorazada, en la cual se guarda gran parte de la reserva de oro de España. La cámara tiene un sistema de seguridad que si alguien intenta entrar, la fuente Cibeles abre unos caños que inundan todo el lugar.
La Fuente antes daba agua a todos los madrileños y tenía dos caños, uno exclusivamente para que los sirvientes de los nobles pudieran llevar agua fresca a sus palacios; y otro para el pueblo de Madrid. Para finalizar os comentaré que hay dos réplicas de la fuente Cibeles en el mundo, una en Ciudad de México y otra en Pekín.

- Palacio de Linares, known in its early years as Murga's Palace, now houses Casa América. It is a public consortium that aims to strengthen ties between Spain and the Americas, especially with Latin America.
- Palacio de Bellavista, currently houses the Headquarters of the Spanish Army. The Cibeles Fountain was destined for the gardens of the palace, but the locals took so much love that it stayed in the place it is currently.
- Palacio de Alcañices, the headquarters of the Bank of Spain. The Goddess Cibeles is very guarded because it protects the gold of the Spanish Reserve. At 54 meters deep there is the vault, in which much of the gold reserve of Spain is stored. The camera has a security system that if someone tries to enter, the Cibeles fountain opens some pipes that flood the entire place.
