Geocache Description:


This can be a VERY busy area, so stealth is needed.

The land on which the park stands was the location of Watergate Colliery which opened in 1924 and closed in 1964, although coal had been mined here since the 1300s.

Once Watergate Colliery closed the area became derelict and the pit buildings fell into disrepair or may possibly have been vandalised.

Around 1991 noxious fumes were noticed in the area, and it turned out that the pit heaps had ignited with an underground fire. Gateshead council bought the land from British Coal and in 1993 started reclaiming the land, initially by taking steps to put out the fire. This took around 2 years.

The site now includes wetlands, woodlands, wildflower meadows and recreational routes, such as walking trails and cycle & horse trails, including those for people with disabilities. It is a haven for wildlife and a great recreational site for visitors.

There is a cafe onsite which is open from 10am daily. Closing time is 3pm on a weekday, and 4pm on a weekend.

There are several entrances to the park, some with and some without parking facilities. The main entrance and large car park is just off B6317 Whichkam highway. A smaller one is located just off the A692 near to Emmanuel College, although that one can be very busy during school term.

There is no wriiting utensil in the cache, so please make sure you carry one with you to sign the log.
