The Ság Hill reservation is the heaven of the hikers. Tourists can visit the crater of this strange chilled volcanic hill. At the end of May it becomes the scene of wind-brands, because of its great acoustic conditions.
The cache is hidden in a bush covered with rocks. The diameter is 13cm, the hight is 5cm.
It's reachable by car from Celldömölk-Alsóság. You can leave your car in the park of the tourist hostel, and follow the yellow trial. From the Monument Trianon Cross, you can go inside the crater on a developed path with bars. Down there, you can make stone messages for the people above.
The volcano that formed the 279-metre high Ság Hill erupted about five million years ago. Those geological events can be observed along a study trail.
Ság Hill (Ság-hegy) rises out of the flat lands. The steeper slopes of the two broken cones show signs of volcanic tuff scattered from the craters, and there are lava banks and the traces of funnel eruptions on the vertical rock faces. A study trail guides visitors through this realm of rocks and geological events. The most striking part is the lava plug that fills the inside of the central crater.
Hungary's smallest landscape protection area, Ság Hill has a warmer and more arid climatic environment than its surroundings. It is an independent island of flora, although, due to vine cultivation, only its upper third retains its original plant life.
Its dominant tree species are the mountain oak (Quercetum pubescentis), the turkey oak (Quercus cerris), wild pear (Pyrus pyraster) and wayfaring tree (Viburnum lantana). Patches on the rock hills are home to the burning bush (Dictamnus albus), bearded iris (Iris variegata), the Illyrian buttercup (Ranunculus illyricus) and the red viper's bugloss (Echium russicum). Immortelle (Xeranthemum annuum) adorns the areas disturbed by mining.
The hill provides a habitat for central European animals, but species that can cope with major fluctuations are more frequent here. Among the birds, ravens nest on the steep crater wall. Tawny owls (Strix aluco), the long-eared owls (Asio otus), barn owls (Tyto alba) and little owls (Athene noctua) can also be spotted. Setting out from a walkers' shelter, the study trail gives a detailed explanation of the hill's natural assets.
It is an interesting scientific historical fact that in 1891 Baron Lóránd Eötvös tried his torsion balance on the top of the Ság Hill, bringing him world fame. That series of measurements is regarded as the birth of a new branch of the sciences, namely the research of gravitational crust structure. A basalt memorial commemorates the experiment.
