The site of the 1855 treaty that unsuccessfully attempted to end
the uprisings against white intrusion into the native lands of the
Middle and Upper Spokans, and the Couer D'Alene and Nez Perce.
This is the tree at the site of the 1855 treaty between Chief Peone
of the Upper Spokans and Governor Isaac Stevens. The tree (also
called the Conference Tree) was highly respected by the natives and
considered a special place. Legend has it that the natives and the
early settlers smoked a peace pipe at this site. The tree is
located on private property, but nearby Doak Road can take you to
within a few hundred feet. To log this cache, post a photo of
yourself with your GPS and the tree in the background, or
alternately email me with the number on the mailbox nearby.
