"Men rise and fall like the winter wheat but these names will never die" - Odysseus
This event is a tribute to our friend David Doane, aka Mr. Oxsling. Dave physically left us in August of this year, but emotionally, spiritually, mentally and cachely he will live on in our hearts and memories forever.
While writing up this page, we did a search for a good definition of a legend. There are many variations as to the meaning and varying "criteria", but regardless of which interpretation of the word you choose, one thing is clear... Dave was a legend... period...end! He would go to other countries and be greeted as a superstar. People at distant events would ask us if we knew him. THAT, friends, is LEGENDARY.
As of this writing, Oxsling's (in various phases of solo and couple) statistics include 4,121 earthcaches; no, not total finds, EARTHCACHES!!! That's almost 1,350 more than the 2nd highest.
While his passion for earthcaches makes him a legend to the world, it is so much more than that which makes him a legend to us. Dave was an instrumental part in the development of the Tennessee Valley caching community. His mischievous smile and twinkling eyes lit up each and every event he attended. His demeanor and wisdom guided many of us individually and certainly influenced TVG as a whole. His contributions to the game, the TVG community and even the website were positive impacts each and every time. And no one we have ever met had better stories than Dave did; we laughed and hung on every word of every tale.
So, yeah, Dave is a legend whatever definition you choose.
We hope you will don your best drab green, tan and taupe garb and join us as we pay homage to one of the great patriarchs of our caching community. We shall gather on 11/11/2019 (Dave's birthday) at, where else but, Famous Dave's at Cedar Bluff from 6-8 PM for dinner and your favorite stories about our friend.
Though MJ will carry on the moniker and the legacy, we hope you can join us to say farewell to the Wandering Hermit since...
Dave's not here, man.

Logging Etiquette: Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of planning and effort to create and place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, the journey or location, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or "copy and paste" logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log.
Travel Bug Etiquette: Cachers pay good money for Travel Bugs and Geocoins. If you take a TB or GC from a cache will you PLEASE ensure it is correctly logged in and out. If you take one that still shows it is somewhere else, please be patient before “grabbing” the item; it does not get its mileage by being grabbed before the last person to drop it has had time to log their placement. This is particularly important on busy and new caches. If you have an issue with a bug or coin, please e-mail or message the owner through their profile and advise them of the issue; they will be pleased to hear from you.
