This cache was placed in memory of the Clifton bridge. It was a covered, wooden bridge that connected Schoolhouse Rd to Fulling Mill Rd. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes swept through the area causing major flooding. I lived one mile down-stream along Swatara creek. We were still in the house when the flood water reached the first floor of our two-story house. I just happened to look out the window when to my dismay, I saw this bridge floating down the middle of the creek. Less than a minute later, there was a horrible crashing noise when this bridge slammed into the iron bridge that connected Vine Street to Swatara Creek Rd. What a sight!
It was about fifteen minutes later, another covered, wooden bridge came floating down the creek. This bridge was Fiddler's Elbow bridge from Hummelstown. Again, that horrible crashing noise when this bridge slammed into the iron bridge and Clifton bridge.
By the way, both of these wooden bridges were in one piece when they came floating down the creek. It was the whole bridge; not broken up in pieces.
