Frozen or Melton
G’day Geocacher... Welcome to Townsville!!
If you are driving along John Melton Black Drive to seek the treasure & sign the log book of this Frozen cache, then please take a moment to ensure you are travelling in a southbound direction with the Townsville Airport possibly in your rear view mirror. There is a safe area at Ground Zero (GZ) here to pull over for a quick park & grab, or you can take some time to admire the paradise above you.
“What is the temperature today?” Is it Frozen or is it Melton… Please be sure to note it in your log.
So who is John Melton Black?
John Melton Black (1830–1919) was a pioneer of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. He ordered the expedition of Cleveland Bay to find a suitable site for a port, and then established the Port of Townsville and the associated town of Townsville. He was the first Mayor of Townsville from 1866-1867.
On Sunday 1 November 1964, the Townsville Centenary Monument was unveiled on The Strand commemorating 100 years of European settlement in Townsville, with particular mention made of four men: Robert Towns, Andrew Ball, Mark Watt Reid and John Melton Black. Black River (both the river and the suburb of Townsville) are named after him. Melton Hill (the 50-metre hill) in Townsville City was named after him and was the name of the first land sale in Townsville. Black's home was on the top of Melton Hill.
The road to the Townsville Airport is called John Melton Black Drive. And you are here!!
This geocache has been inspired by our move to Townsville in 2015, & this Drive & by my geo-munchkins love of a certain movie.
Cache contains room for SWAG & small Trackables.
