Welcome to the Newport Library Multi-cache of fun!
The cache container is NOT located at the posted coordinates, but is close and within walking distance.
This Multi will require you to explore the library grounds and discover different works of art on display. You'll have to search an area outside the library, as well as both upstairs and downstairs before you will be able to solve for the final location. This cache is meant to be a way to discover something new you may have never seen before. It's best to bring a piece of paper and writing utensil with you to make notes and help keep track of your information for the final location. This cache could take you 30 minutes to an hour or so to solve it, depending on your walking speed and clue detection.
Let's begin!
Stage 1
You will first need to visit the location that is outside of the library. Here you will see two different markers that will have information to help you. Make sure you follow the directions and keep your letters and numbers in order. In this stage, you are looking for 2 letters that will signify the section of the library where the final container is located.
For the first letter of the section, what is the top right letter that is in the children's book?
For the second letter of the section, what is the first letter in the first word on the larger, second plaque on the rock?
You should now have the 2 letters that will determine where the container is located.
Stage 2
For stage 2 of this multi, you will need to visit the upstairs section of the library. You will be searching out 3 different pieces of art that will give you the first 3 numbers in the Dewey Decimal code for the location of the final container.
For the first number you will need to visit the mural on the wall outside the Teen Center. Multiply the number of prongs found on the trident by the number 3 to get the first number in the Dewey Decimal code.
For the second number you will need to find the large acrylic painting on the back wall. Once there, count how many letters there are in the artist's name and the title of the work. Remember that number, we'll call it A. Then multiply the two numbers found on the bottom of the same sign ( __ x __). We'll call that number B. You will then need to divide A by B. That number will be the second number in the Dewey Decimal code.
For the third number you will need to find the display case that houses the HMS Victory. It can be found next to the Fireplace Reading Lounge tile art. The day that the HMS Victory launched (Launched May __, 1765) will be the third number in the Dewey Decimal code.
You should now have the first three numbers in the Dewey Decimal code for the location of the final container. The last 2 numbers you will find will come after the decimal point in the Dewey Decimal code. Example: AA bbb.cc where stage 1 found AA and stage 2 found bbb. Stage 3 will find cc.
Stage 3
For stage 3 of this multi, you will need to visit the downstairs section of the library. You will be searching out 3 different pieces of art that will give you the last 2 numbers in the Dewey Decimal code for the location of the final container.
For the first number you will need to visit the Story Corner by Jack Wennstrom. The number of sunflowers in the mural will give you the fourth number in the Dewey Decimal code.
To find the final number, you will need to visit two different pieces of art and once again work out some math.
First you need to visit the Ceramic Platter by Frank Boyden that is hanging on the wall near the stairs and elevator. What is the diameter of the piece? Take that number and add 4 to it. Keep that number in mind.
Now you will need to find the Pen and Ink drawing of Walter Gordon towards the back of the room, located on one of the support columns. Divide your earlier number (platter diameter plus 4) by the number of buttons visible on his coat in the drawing. This number will be the final digit in the Dewey Decimal code.
You should now have all the numbers in the Dewey Decimal code and be able to find the final location.
Stage 4
The final stage of this multi is to piece together all of the information you've gathered from the previous stages.
Remember, in stage 1 you were to find two letters that would indicate what section of the library the container would be located in. In stage 2 you were to find the first three numbers in the Dewey Decimal code. In stage 3 you were to find the final two numbers in the code. You should have a finished set of information that looks like this: AA bbb.cc.
If you've followed all the directions and found the information you've needed to discover the location, you should have no problem finding the hidden container. One last thing: the final piece of information that can be given is that the author of this book has a last name of CACHE.
