During the 1860's, coal and gold were discovered, which led to a rush of immigrants to our shore, all keen to make a fortune in the growing economies west of the Southern Alps. The fastest route to the goldfields was by ship, so the Port of Greymouth was born. Being a river port, entering and exiting was always dangerous. Vessels entering the West Coast river ports had to deal with hazards of dangerous bars of submerged sand ridges that shifted with every storm. Vessels often had to wait in the roadstead for favourable conditions for over a week. This was a dangerous practice as well. Paddle tugs were essential to ferry passengers and cargo from large ships and help vessels in and out of the port. Our growing nation demanded all the coal the Grey District coalfields could produce, making Greymouth one of the busiest ports in the Dominion. Coal, coupled with the huge demand for timber from Westland's native forests, was creating much wealth in the booming town of Greymouth.
