Geocache Description:

The Tuia Mātauranga GeoTour is about having fun discovering the history of Aotearoa New Zealand by finding sites of significance in local communities from early Pacific voyaging and migration, European settlement to present day. The gold rush at Kumara, which became known as New Zealand's last gold rush, was started by a couple of moon-shiners.

During the early 1870s prospectors Dick Cashman and James Conner were not having much luck and decided to take up moon-shining (illicit distilling) as a more profitable pastime. They carried a still up the Taramakau River and went deep into the bush where the smoke wouldn't be noticed.
Following a small creek they found a good place and began to dig out a platform for the tubs and still. Imagine their surprise and joy when they saw coarse nuggety gold in the gravel.
Although they kept quiet about their discovery curious miners attempted to follow Cashman and Conner home when they came to town for supplies but were invariably led along a false trail.
After several years Cashman and Conner's secret was finally discovered with the finders being flabbergasted at the extensive nature of the workings.

This is also the site of the Old Swimming Bath, you can read all about it from the board at GZ.

Inside the appropriately themed container are 2 logbooks, 1 for signing your geocaching name and the other for letterboxing stamps. Please do not remove the stamp from the container.

To be able to complete this Geotour and receive your special geocoin, remember to take a note of the codeword on the backside of the log book. This will need to be recorded in your passport which can be downloaded from HERE. If the passport is unavailable for any reason just keep a note of the codeword and try again later.
