Cobden Gun Emplacement
The gun emplacement was strategically placed so it could cover the entrance of the Grey River and had a clear firing range of 10 miles.
In the face of the very real threat of invasion during WWII it was part of the New Zealand coastal defences and was active from 1942 to 1944. At the time 1800 men from Hokitika and Greymouth, and 600 in Westport were enrolled in the Home Guard.
It was manned by 2 Officers, 1 warrant Officer, 3 sergeants and 26 operational reserves.
Besides the 5" Mk7 gun there were 4x 40mm Bofors anti-aircraft/multi-purpose canons.
Some of 5" MK7 guns employed by New Zealand had been salvaged from naval ships lost at Pearl Harbour.
There is little more left than a graffiti covered concrete bunker but the site played an important part in the coastal defences of New Zealand at the time. From the first step up there is very little that's flat. There is a seat at step 78 to catch your breath before reaching step 153 and GZ
The walk is 15 Minutes return.
