Reno Air Race Cache Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Green Achers: I understand the area was burned and the cache is gone. The history remains forever. Time to archive this cache, in keeping with GroundSpeaks ranking system, as I can’t get over quickly to replace it. Sad ending to a valued cache.

Geocache Description:

This is a place you can see the Reno Air Races while caching. It's not as close as you'll want to be but you could never the less see them racing from here.

I'll be writting more information here in the future as this location has history that I want to correctly document. It involves a mine, a hideout, a bad guy, cops, a shootout, and a dead bad guy. Anyway, this place is all safe now for your visit and geohunt.

This cache is in the area of a silver mine! In fact, a few years ago, it was also a crime scene. (I'm not sure why I always think mines involve bad guys... but this one did).

The cache is stashed around the area that this bad guy was when the cops arrived. Using an M-1000 (I believe that's correct) this guy openned fire on the marked patrol car as it started up the hill. The police made it past the shooters window of view and ended up pinned at the other mine area for about five hours.

After night fall the swat team was able to come in from the back side... only to find out that the guy had already saved the tax payers money (no trial needed for this bad guy, if you know what I mean.)

These details are a summory of the tail I learned as I was there. I am still in research of the written reports so I can get the details verified/corrected. For now, this will have to do.

As far as the cache, if you have a 4x4, you can drive to the location. Otherwise it's a short walk. The cache area is BLM land and I had the Sherriff's help in chosing the location!

Hope you like it and we'll up date this after this as soon as I get more details.

When we planted this cache, we drove up in a real nice Jeep Grand Cherokee without getting touched by desert stuff (dead plants?). Larger trucks may not have the same luck of not getting scratched. If you want to assure your vehicle doesn't get scratched, you can park at N39*38.765, W119*55.885 and walk the rest of the way. It will be the same hunt for you.
